How to write a good scientific paper and submit it successfully

This workshop will be given by a physics editor of Springer-Verlag, one of the worldwide leading international publishing companies. A careful introduction to scientific publishing is given together with detailed advice for researchers and advanced students on how to prepare good scientific papers. The topics discussed will include: types and contents of scientific publications; steps to plan a scientific publication; writing style of scientific publications (short notes, original papers, review papers, books); the importance of proper references; structure of a scientific paper; survey of most appropriate scientific journals; problems of submission and acceptance of scientific papers; public and political influence on scientific publications (including an introduction electronic publishing and to the Science citation Index). Grant writing for beginners

This workshop will be given by a former member of an evaluation panel of EU grant proposals and provide an intensive and detailed introduction to the process, structure, and skill of proposal writing explained for a typical first personal grant like the Marie Curie Individual Fellowships of the EU. In this workshop, attendees will learn the entire proposal writing process and acquire a solid understanding of not only the ideal proposal structure, but a complete general understanding of the essential factors, which determine whether or not a proposal gets funded. Through interactive exercises and activities, attendees will put what they learn into practice. The aim is to learn how to transform a research idea into a proper research proposal using the logical framework method but also to view your own project proposal through the eyes of an evaluator. Attendees will have to write a short text before the workshop which will be used to further develop their writing skills. Topics handled during the workshop: how to describe the essence in a few phrases, "selling" a grant proposal, how to be concise, how to express the innovative character of your research.

An introduction to patent issues

This workshop will be given by a patent examiner affiliated with the European Patent Office in The Hague. The aim of the workshop is to impart a basic knowledge on patent issues: The different patenting procedures (EPC, PCT, national) will be introduced so that the attendees learn about the advantages/disadvantages of each procedure and can therefore develop their own patent strategy. Practical examples will illustrate this part and information about costs and main characteristics of the European Patent Office as well as the focal points of the EPC and PCT procedures will be illustrated. Basic information about existing patent databanks (ESPACENET, Derwent, ...) will be given and through hands-on training the attendees will be taught how to research patent literature. With practical examples the attendees will learn to recognize patent violations and be taught how to react to them. All steps in the registration of a patent will be illustrated. In particular, the attendees will be taught how to formulate claims and what information has to be prepared by the researcher so that a patent attorney can file a patent. Again practical cases will be discussed. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own examples (but not those for actual introduction at the EPO). Finally, information on the "Life of a Patent" will be provided - focus will be on the duration of a patent, procedures regarding appeals, violation of patents etc.
